FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York , PA The Codorus Creek Improvement Partnership and the Watershed Alliance of York will coordinate the 4th annual Codorus Creek Clean-Up , to be held May 14-16 and May 20-22 , 2005. The cleanup area will be on Codorus Creek from Codorus Furnace to the Susquehanna River (directions below). This cleanup will be in a new section for us. This area is littered with d ebris from last year's floods, particularly along the Codorus delta area. Items that need removed include: large propane tanks, 55 gallon drums, fuel tanks, swimming pools, furniture, and tens of thousands of plastic bottles and chunks of Styrofoam.
Participants will meet and park at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Riverview Dr in East Manchester Township , just across the Codorus from Codorus Furnace, off the Wrightsville or Hellam exits. Please come to Riverview Dr. between 9 am and 3 pm on the CleanUp days to register. If you are bringing a big group, please let us know by calling us at CCIP's office, 848-1900 .
Participants will register, get safety sheets, sign waivers, and receive trash bags, gloves, beverages, and a meal at lunch. Volunteers should wear boots and long pants and bring waders or hip-boots if they have them. Facilities will be available for changing and cleanup. Work teams will be chosen, and team leaders will be given emergency radios. All safety concerns will be addressed including flagging of dangerous zones and the distribution of safety facts sheets. Bring insect repellant and/or sunscreen if desired. Recommended for ages 8 and up: 8-13 accompanied by leader, ages 14-17 with parental waiver.
We need people in boats dredging for items in the creek, people collecting items along the banks and islands, and people and trucks carrying items to the dumpsters. We also need folks with first aid skills, and people to register volunteers as they come in.
The Clean-Up gives citizens a chance to actively participate in community improvements, focuses media attention on the need for watershed stewardship, increases awareness to the general public of the current state of the watershed, and promotes the potential recreational possibilities of our waterways.
Previous cleanups have resulted in the removal of over 100 tons of debris from in and along the Codorus Creek. Some interesting items removed include: the mixer from a cement mixing truck, an entire dumpster, an 1800's wagon wheel, and most of the parts from a Honda civic, not to mention the hundreds of bicycles and over 2000 tires. Although it's been a lot of work, there's always time to enjoy the natural beauty and laugh at some of the odd things that end up in our Codorus.
